Settlement calls for 5-year watch of NYC hospital

NEW YORK_A Brooklyn hospital where a patient died in a waiting room will undergo improvements mandated by a consent decree aimed at settling litigation over conditions there.

The settlement announced Friday calls for conditions at the Kings County Hospital to continue to be monitored by a federal judge for five years.

A lawsuit had alleged that psychiatric inpatient units were overcrowded and dangerously unsanitary and that patients were routinely ignored and abused.

In June 2008, 49-year-old Esmin Green languished for nearly 24 hours before collapsing from a blood clot. She had had been diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Details of the Jamaican immigrant's death went largely unnoticed until security camera footage became public and resulted in public outrage.
