Former nurse convicted in Pa. boy's morphine death

LANCASTER, Pa._A former visiting nurse has been convicted of third-degree murder for giving an 11-year-old central Pennsylvania boy a lethal dose of morphine.

A Lancaster County jury also found 50-year-old Joy O'Shea Woomer guilty of drug delivery resulting in death and delivery of a controlled substance.

Jurors reached their verdict Friday after more than six hours of deliberations.

Prosecutors say Woomer gave Brent Weaver a fatal dose of morphine at his East Hempfield Township home in September 2002.

The boy's mother, Carol Weaver, put her head down and repeatedly whispered "thank you" when the verdict was announced.

Woomer testified that she never gave the any medication to the boy, who had cerebral palsy.
