COLUMBIA, S.C._New lawsuit limits slated for discussion by legislators are being pitched as a way to help South Carolina's economy recover.
A Senate Judiciary panel takes up legislation that would limit lawsuit awards Wednesday.
The bill would broaden 2005 limits placed on medical malpractice claims to other litigation.
For instance, pain and suffering awards would be limited to $1 million. Punitive awards against larger employers could be no more than three times the actual amount of damages or $250,000, whichever is more.
The South Carolina Civil Justice Coalition is pushing the legislation. It says changes can make the difference in economic development deals.
