Doc, 2 others indicted in $1 million fraud case

CHICAGO -- A medical doctor, a chiropractor and a billing employee at a Maywood clinic have been indicted on federal charges of taking part in a $1 million health care fraud.

The three defendants, Dr. Jacob Salomon, chiropractor Darwin Minnis and clinic employee Gary Strauss, are accused of falsifying claims for workers compensation and other benefits that were inflated or for services that were never provided.

The suburban Chicago clinic, known as the Spine and Joint Rehabilitation Center, was owned by Minnis. Most patients were U.S. Postal Service employees.

Minnis was charged Thursday with 18 counts of health care fraud, with Salomon and Strauss charged with one count each.

Salomon attorney Thomas McQueen declined to comment. Telephone messages left for the attorneys of the two other defendants were not immediately returned.
